Cologne/Cancun, May 22nd 2017 – From today onwards, ASB stands up for the needs and requirements of persons with disability in disaster risk reduction worldwide during the 5th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Cancun, Mexico.
"Persons with disabilities are particularly vulnerable during and after natural disasters like earthquakes, floods or landslides", says Michael Schnatz, head of the department for disaster preparedness and civil protection within ASB Germany. „Plans for disaster risk reduction and disaster preparedness have to consider their special needs. Those concepts also need to be included in the training of aid workers and volunteers in disaster preparedness and civil protection."
This means, for instance, that emergency exits as well as escape routes have to be clearly marked in order to be found easily by persons with disabilities. It goes without saying, that the escape ways as well as the emergency shelter have to be accessible for persons with disabilities and that they have to be equipped in an inclusive manner.
„The needs of persons with disabilities have to be considered and respected and inclusive solutions have to be actively provided in all concepts and trainings of disaster preparedness and civil protection – in Germany and worldwide", says Michael Schnatz.
ASB has been working to establish inclusive disaster risk reduction (DRR) for many years. The organisation has successfully implemented projects on inclusive DRR in Indonesia, the Philippines, in Nepal, Georgia and Nicaragua and is planning to extend its commitment to further regions and countries. In Europe, ASB – together with other Samaritan organisations – is working on the development and implementation of an Inclusive Disaster Resilience Index (INDRIX).
The Global Platform has been held for the first time in 2007. Since then, it has been taking place every two years. It is the leading event on disaster risk reduction worldwide. ASB is part of the disability stakeholder group. The motto of its presence in Cancun is „ALL OF US for disability inclusive disaster risk reduction".
