Helping People in Nepal | ASB Foreign Aid

The ASB has been operating in Nepal since the major earthquake that struck the country in April 2015. Initially, the focus of the work was on the care and protection of those affected after the disaster as well as on reconstruction. This was followed by the earthquake-proof and accessible reconstruction of two educational institutions as well as the implementation of inclusive training offers, among other things, by creating an accessible learning environment or translating the training content into sign language. Participants were taught extensive knowledge, especially in the areas of livelihoods and disaster risk reduction. The focus is now on better preparing communities for extreme situations and empowering the population in dealing with them.

Increased resilience of communities

The ASB is helping communities in Bhutan and Nepal to deal better with the consequences and challenges of natural disasters. People are learning how to act in the event of a disaster such as a flood or earthquake. Early warning systems have been installed and evacuation routes and shelters have been established, which are also accessible to people with wheelchairs. In addition, the ASB helps to improve the quality of life of the population by creating sustainable income opportunities. Disabled persons and elderly people are educated about their rights regarding equality, accessibility, protection and safety in dangerous situations. The ASB also helps to break down barriers that prevent people with disabilities from participating in society. This happens, for example, when a person is excluded from a social life as a result of prejudices.

COVID-19 protection in Nepal

The partner organisation of the ASB, “READ Nepal”, educated the population about COVID-19. They were extensively informed about Covid, hygiene measures and transmission routes to protect people particularly vulnerable to a severe course of COVID-19. This group includes in particular the elderly, people with disabilities and people living in extreme poverty. In addition, the partner organisation provided hygiene packages with masks, gloves or thermometers to social institutions such as hospitals.

Promoting inclusive disaster risk reduction III

The partner organisation of the ASB, “READ Nepal” delivered hygiene packages with masks, soap, bed linen or washing machines to the municipalities and, with its work on the ground, contributes to improving the ability of the people living there to respond to challenges or crises. Key actors such as the disaster management and social authorities or staff at educational institutions were trained by READ Nepal in actively involving people with disabilities in policy-making. The aim is to ensure that people with disabilities are not only perceived as recipients of aid, but also actively considered. It also aims to encourage particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly or people with disabilities to solve their own problems and to sustain themselves from their own income.

Promoting inclusive disaster relief II

The ASB worked closely with the non-profit organisation “READ Nepal”. The project aimed to integrate people with disabilities into disaster risk management programmes. Four educational institutions providing training were supported by the ASB in making people more resilient and resistant to unforeseen events such as natural disasters, economic challenges or societal changes, and in helping to think about people with disabilities. For example, the educational institutions were rebuilt with an accessible design so that people with wheelchairs could also participate in the training courses. The focus was thus on helping the elderly, people with disabilities and people living in extreme poverty.
