Assistance to internally displaced persons | Ukraine

Through the project, the ASB is supporting internally displaced persons in western Ukraine. A variety of measures are being taken to support residents of collective shelters, as well as people who are living in rented flats in western Ukraine. Persons with disabilities face particular risks, challenges and overlapping problems when fleeing from their homes. The aim is to provide them with physical resources to participate in their daily lives and to facilitate their access to various facilities such as schools and toilets.

Target group: Internally displaced persons, in particular women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities

The Russian invasion of 24 February 2022 has driven many Ukrainians to leave their homeland due to active fighting. In order to get to safety, people from the east in particular fled to parts of the relatively safe western Ukraine. Most IDPs stay in host communities and live off their savings. Only about 5% are housed in collective shelters on a temporary basis or for a longer period of time. These collective shelters were built to be temporary structures by the host communities, for example in vacant municipal buildings, such as schools or sports halls.

The ASB supports internally displaced persons with cash. The people in need receive money for rent or to have at their disposal in order to make a living.

In addition, people in collective shelters are provided with food and hygiene products. People with disabilities receive the aids that they individually require, such as wheelchairs or walking aids. In addition, the collective shelters units are provided with mattresses, blankets, clothing, dishes or torches.
