Points of Invincibility

The Ukrainian Samaritan organisation SSU, ASB's local partner, is providing two points of invincibility in coordination with the city of Kyiv's civil protection department. The people affected by war can warm up there, charge their mobile devices and are provided with hot meals. The points of invincibility also have overnight accommodation capacity in case people lose their homes as a result of attacks and need short-term accommodation.

In addition, food and hygiene products are distributed in the greater Kyiv area. SSU is also distributing sets of gas cookers, gas cartridges, water purification tablets and instant meals to particularly vulnerable households in various parts of the country.

Target groups: War-affected population in Kyiv and Kyiv region, especially internally displaced persons, unemployed people; people whose homes have been damaged, elderly people, people living alone, people with disabilities and families with many children

During the autumn and winter of 2022/2023, critical infrastructure and energy supply systems in Ukraine were targeted by air strikes. As a direct result, many people experienced prolonged power outages. After reconstruction in the spring and summer of 2023, the energy supply system had reached 65% of its original capacity. However, the infrastructure is still vulnerable to air strikes and power outages are expected, especially when temperatures drop below 10°C. The risk of power outages is particularly high in the Kyiv region, as less electricity is generated than consumed and the region is frequently affected by air strikes. During power cuts, heaters, cookers and water pumps stop working, leaving people without access to running water, hot drinks and food, as well as internet and mobile phone services. The Warming Points provide the affected population with temporary stoves, fan heaters and mobile field kitchens.
The project builds on its predecessor from the winter of 2022/2023 and uses existing infrastructure procured as part of the previous 2022/2023 project.

How the ASB is helping in Ukraine

Points of invincibility in Kyiv

1gelb.png

In Kyiv, two points of invincibility provide the population with the opportunity to warm up, get hot food and drinks and charge their mobile devices. The points of invincibility are independent of the local electricity and water supply thanks to ovens, fan heaters, mobile field kitchens and bio-toilets, so that they can also supply the population in the event of a power cut.

Both points also have bunk beds so that people whose homes have been damaged or cannot be heated due to problems with the power supply can find short-term accommodation there.

The staff, who is  providing round the clock care throughout the week, also provides basic medical care.
