Emergency relief for Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons in northern Iraq | Iraq

Between 2014 and 2021, the ASB provided emergency assistance to a total of 13,838 families (78,683 people) who had to flee from the war in Syria or the advance of ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq.

Target group: Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in camps. A total of 13,838 families and 78,683 people in various camps in northern Iraq were reached

The advance of ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq triggered large forced migration movements from January 2014. Most people were able to escape with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. A large proportion of the families that have been housed in refugee or IDP camps in northern Iraq and the autonomous region of Kurdistan lost everything they owned, with no income opportunities and relying almost entirely on others for help.

How the ASB is helping in Iraq

Securing the basic necessities of life

As part of 13 different projects, the ASB supported basic services for refugees and IDPs in six different camps (Berseve I + II, Darkar, Domiz I, Gawilan, Bardarash). The ASB provided support by ensuring healthcare, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), hygiene training, distribution of relief supplies (winter aid with stoves, fuel, blankets, winter clothing and hygiene packages) and distribution of cash and vouchers.

First Assistance Samaritan Teams

The First Assistance Samaritan Teams is made up of ASB members from all over Germany. They give up their free time to train as foreign aid workers specialising in basic medicine or drinking water treatment.
